Uche Ignites Straightforward Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding result that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct entry to the last 16, especially after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their domestic season proved no match against a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
