"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: I also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated supporters have publicly petitioned for the role.

It's clear something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their visuals frequently depict them walking in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the greatest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to start a band."

"And thus all gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Historic Nod

The group have called into a break, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the honor resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The trio's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

However the sister act will forever be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "There is no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
