Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a exciting storyline including divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences increasing in power within the urban setting.

Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 are included.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

The third episode finished on a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of heroes who will separate from the central cast to undertake their independent quest, separate from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table includes Teor (portrayed by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering a large ensemble, it was obvious from the start that maintaining everyone at one table would be unworkable.

Hence, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Prelude, weaving together the characters’ stories before splitting into three distinct groups: Warriors, Schemers, and Questers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who are drawn to a typically action-packed battle-oriented story mode where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer the cleric might appear mismatched, but the events of episode 3 show why these five characters are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the team understands precisely where to proceed after a violent first encounter with the enemy group.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose demise initiated the story’s plot—used the foes for his selfish purposes, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The traitor then settled his liabilities and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each adventurer has a specific drive to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and trusted friend, seeks vengeance.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the northern area and warns that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his family’s wishes to execute Teor and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their status as important members in the influential clan could assist the team access locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character pledged a eternal obligation to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule the city for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The rogue and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and Wicander defied House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
  • The target is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This results in them few options but to travel to Timmony in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we find out that the Soldiers table will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight cast members to assemble the Questers and Strategists groups.

Audiences can look forward to learning which adventurers will be where in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, released on October 24.
