Colombian Leader Warns 'I Shall Take Up Arms Once More' should American Forces Invades.

Donald Trump and his Colombian counterpart have escalated the volume in their verbal conflict, further raising strains bilaterally after American military units struck Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He runs cocaine mills and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Rising Rhetoric coupled with Allegations

Addressing journalists on Sunday, Trump threatened comparable use of force towards the South American nation, stating the country is “very sick too” and led by a sick man involved in producing narcotics and distributing it to America."

Although Colombia stands as the leading source of the narcotic, no proof exists implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally involved in the business.

A Frayed Partnership

This nation was historically a staunch collaborator of Washington in the campaign against drug trafficking and received cross-party backing in the US capital, yet ties have worsened dramatically following Trump was elected.

The nation's drug trade is predominantly run by guerrilla factions such as the Clan del Golfo, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and breakaway groups of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members disbanded following a historic peace agreement.

The President's Strong Rebuttal

In response to a query if armed intervention like that in Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle in the last century, rejected the accusations. "I am not illegitimate and I am not a narco," he stated.

"The US president speaks without information. End the false accusations," he posted online.

"Should American forces attack rural communities, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. If they capture me, which a significant portion of the population loves and respects, they will release the powerful force of the populace," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

The president dedicated part of his youth as a member of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group though it is believed to have ever engaged in fighting. Upon leaving the group, he participated in drafting the constitutional rewrite in the early 90s subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He served as mayor of Bogotá prior to his election president.

"I pledged to never again hold arms again ... but in defense of my country I will take up the fight," he affirmed.

Increased Security and Widespread Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Petro's protection team was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with the US president, however, leaders from all sides of Colombian politics have condemned the possibility of a US attack against their nation.

Bilateral and Economic Strains

The US withdrew his travel authorization following he encouraged American soldiers to disobey any illegal orders. In October, the US enacted asset freezes against the president, the first lady and various associates.

Concurrently as the US increased its troop levels in the Caribbean and striking suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed strikes on maritime targets off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
